I'm really enjoying learning to use graphite. Seems like I would've learned it before, but my art education has been anything but normal. Really, however, what I've actually been learning lately is how light falls across forms, and is defined by shadows. Graphite, or anything else, is just a medium to an end. ...Fun! ...I think I've drawn Kenny (Durkin) from his photo in Keelan's book about 20 times now, over the last five years. LOL

Thanks, Esly. It was really fun to do. Wish I had a picture of Andi to do as well... I might start doing ALL of my studio caricatures like this, combining exaggeration with realism, a bit like Kruger. Doesn't look like a cartoon at all, but some sort of ACTUAL thing. I think Kruger calls it New Pop Realism. ... Takes about 4 hours. (Or at least this one did.)
Of course, I'll still do simple retail and gig caricatures quickly in marker...
And I am NOT trying to compare myself to Kruger. I just thought of him after I did this one, and looked at his work for the first time in a couple of years. (He doesn't do caricatures anymore, by the way; only portraits.)
really? I didn't know Kruger only did portraits! That's crazy. I wonder why? How'd you know that?
